MacBook Keyboard Unlock and Troubleshooting Guide
If your MacBook keyboard is not working as if it were locked, checking the following steps in order will resolve most issues.
0) Identify the Symptoms
- A. Only certain keys are not working
- B. Slow response or duplicate input across the keyboard
- C. No input at all on the login screen or in text fields
- D. Physical impact, such as liquid exposure or a drop
1) Disable Keyboard Settings That May Lock Input
- In Accessibility → Keyboard, turn off Sticky Keys/Slow Keys.
- Review Keyboard → Text Input → Input Sources (such as ABC or Korean 2-Set).
- In Keyboard, check the Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys option.
2) Quick Recovery
- Log out or restart, and disconnect Bluetooth peripherals.
- Use Keyboard Viewer in the menu bar to check whether keystrokes are detected.
3) Only Certain Keys Are Not Working
- With the Mac powered off, remove debris with canned air (do not use liquid).
- Restore default keyboard shortcuts.
4) Entire Keyboard Is Unresponsive (Reset)
- Apple Silicon: Shut down → press and hold the power button (startup options) → shut down, then start normally.
- Intel: Reset the SMC (hold Shift+Control+Option (left)+Power for 10 seconds); if needed, reset NVRAM (⌥⌘PR for 20 seconds).
5) Issue Only on the Login Screen
- Log in with another user account or Guest User.
- Reset the input source shortcut (such as ⌘+Space).
6) Cross-Test
If an external keyboard works normally, an issue with the built-in hardware is more likely; service is recommended.
7) If the Keyboard Has Been Exposed to Liquid
Shut down immediately → disconnect → drain and dry. Do not turn the power back on. Have it inspected by an authorized service provider.
