Excel sorting is set to vertical orientation by default. However, you can also sort horizontally depending on your settings.

The data table below is not sorted by day of the week.

This data needs to be sorted horizontally because it is not sorted by day of the week.


First, enter numbers above the data items. Use unique numbers in the order you want to sort horizontally.

For horizontal sorting, enter numbers above the item names in the desired sort order.


Then use “CTRL+A” to select all data.

Use the Select All Cells feature.


After selecting the data range, select the advanced sort feature.

By default, advanced sorting is set to sort vertically, as shown below.
